Tewa aims to support the local women’s movement in such a way that it can be sustainably active independently of foreign funding donors. The strategy includes developing fundraising capacities and a culture of philanthropy. Tewa collaborates with a network of volunteer fundraisers. The funds are awarded to grassroots women’s groups as promotion grants. Last year Tewa began a cooperation arrangement with five women’s organisations in the Kaski District of the municipality of Pokhare. In turn these organisations are training fundraisers and awarding small grants to local women’s groups. Tewa’s philanthropic model is thus being adapted at local level and allows sustainable development of active women’s groups in the districts. This project is to be started in two further districts in the coming year.

Part of the Strategic Plan of MONES from the year 2006 is a comprehensive “Rural Women’s Empowerment Program”. One of the program objectives is to increase women’s stakeholding in political processes. The program already produced success stories in the pilot province of Zavkhan in 2008 and 2009. A regional network of women’s groups was established and specifically supports women in their efforts to become elected. And the result? – A 5% increase in the proportion of women in the regional parliament. MONES is now beginning a comparable empowerment program in the adjacent provinces of Khovd, Gobi-Altai, Bayan-Ulgii and Uvs with training sessions and networking of NGOs. The program addresses young women particularly. The MONES working method always includes “peer exchanges” – women’s groups from different provinces visit each other. Women from Zavkhan will conduct the training sessions for the women of other provinces.
