Following the earthquake desaster in Port-au-Prince on 12 January 2010, filia started a call for donations to strengthen women’s role in reconstruction. In solidarity with the women and girls of Haiti, over 80 donors transferred funds totalling EURO 24,237 to filia. The money was forwarded without any deductions to the crisis fund of the Global Fund for Women in San Francisco, the world’s largest women’s foundation. The local centre of assistance for women and girls in is the Myriam Merlet Feminist International Solidarity Camp based in Jimani on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It was named after the Haitian feminist Myriam Merlet who was killed in the earthquake. After the earthquake, violence against women and girls increased significantly. The women’s organisation KOFAVIV that receives support from the crisis fund distributed shrill whistles to women in the improvised camps and organised night-time patrols. In July a delegation of the Global Fund travelled to Haiti to learn from the women on the spot what their situation is and what support is most expedient for them.

Project “07-07-07 Campaign Act to End Hate!”
Violence against lesbian and gay people is the order of the day in South Africa. The campaign “07-07-07 Act to End Hate” is supported by an alliance of over 25 South African organisations. This alliance was formed following the brutal murder of Sizakele Sigasa and Salome Masooa, two lesbian women, on 07.07.2007. filia set up a temporary account for donations to support the campaign.
Attacks on members of sexual minorities by the police too are by no means rare. In September 2009 lesbian women in the Township Vosloorus were attacked by the police when they returned from the Ekurhuleni Pride March in Kwa-Thema. With the donations received, filia supports the actions of the activists against homophobic attacks by the police.
