Projects in Germany 2010

Berlin

Netzwerk Artikel 3 e.V.
www.nw3.de
Project “Translation into English of the interpretation standards of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities from the women’s perspective”
Netzwerk Artikel 3, an association for human rights and equal rights of persons with disabilities, already worked successfully to mainstream the women’s perspective during the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The interpretation standard from the women’s perspective that they developed should help women’s and disabled persons’ organisations to claim state action to implement human rights of women and girls with disabilities. So far the interpretation standard is only available in German. If it is translated into English, it can become effective in the international debates. The global non-governmental organisation “Disabled peoples International” has promised to translate the standards from English on into French and Spanish.

Project “Founding a country-wide network of FGM Counsellors in African communities”
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is practiced in African and Asian countries. In Germany, girls with a migration background from these countries are threatened by this violation of their human rights. It is not yet common practice to deploy counsellors with an African background for education and prevention work in the African communities in Germany. However, such persons could play a crucial role in influencing mothers and fathers. That is why Maisha e.V. plans to develop and train a network of such counsellors. Terre des Femmes supports the initiative and is helping to organise the meetings.

Project “Visionews. International media campaign for participation of women in peace processes”
To publicise UN Resolution 1325 that promotes active involvement of women in peace processes and above all to disseminate good examples of its implementation, Owen in cooperation with the Global Cooperation Council (sponsor organisation for the news agency Inter Press Service Deutschland), 1000 Peace Women Across the Globe and the German Women’s Security Council has founded Visionews. Visionews is a source of information: it publishes success stories and inspiring peace visions from all over the world, recounting examples of successful commitment intended to encourage others. The good examples that can be read on the bilingual (English/German) website www.visionews.net can be used by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), women’s peace groups and all interested parties. filia supported the start-up phase of the project.
